Fabrizio Romano has claimed today will be a key day in Chelsea’s pursuit of Jules Kounde.
The Blues have re-emerged as the favourites to sign the Frenchman, potentially putting to bed a saga which has now lasted over a year.
They have been facing competition from Barcelona for the deal, with the Catalan side looking to hijack another deal from under Todd Boehly’s nose.
The move would see the 23-year-old follow Raphinha in players joining Xavi’s side despite looking set for moves to Stamford Bridge.
However, the situation differs this time around, with Romano claiming the Blues’ bid matches Sevilla’s valuation of the defender.
He tweeted in the early hours of the morning: “Jules Koundé deal. Chelsea are now feeling confident as £55m bid was in line with Sevilla expectations, but still waiting for final green light. Thursday, key day.
“Deal until 2027 offered to Koundé. No Barcelona bid, as of now – club still in contact with Koundé.”

Today crucial in Kounde Saga
The club’s desire to add defenders has been well-documented this summer, with them already securing the signing of 31-year-old Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.
With the Frenchman’s ability to play on the right of defence, he looks set to become the perfect replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta, who looks set to move to Barcelona as well.
The deal has also grown in importance to the new owners at Stamford Bridge, with them keen to not be seen as a side that can be bullied in the transfer market. Losing out to another key target to Barcelona would certainly give that impression, potentially impacting future negotiations.
Even if they do get Kounde over the line, their work in the market for defenders may not be done, as they continue their hunt for Presnel Kimpembe, with Thomas Tuchel reportedly keen on a reunion with the Frenchman, following their time together at PSG.
