Mason Mount has always been a leader by example, even as one of the youngest players in the dressing room.
Now he’s getting older and wiser, and his status in the dressing room is only growing as he racks up appearances for the club.
He captained the side in the second half of the friendly against Charlotte this week, and in quotes picked up by The Evening Standard after the game he revealed that he wanted more of that responsibility.
“Yes, I am still young and I am still learning but whenever the opportunity comes to step up I want to take it,” the midfielder mused.
“Obviously, the gaffer trusted me with captaining the side in the second half and I take that responsibility. Whether we win, whether we lose I always want to be the won to be able to take it.
“To take it on the chin if we win and obviously if we lose as well.”
He’s pretty far back in the pecking order for the armband as it stands – Cesar Azpilicueta is captain, with Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Marcos Alonso making up the next tier of players in line to take over should Azpilicueta leave this summer.
But that trio are all in the same boat, with one year left on their contracts, so Mount could very rapidly rise up the rankings in the next 12 months.
