The Uruguayan made a return to first club Nacional in his country home over the weekend and has since been presented to the fans

Luis Suarez took Europe by storm having played in 3 countries since leaving Nacional 16 years ago all of which sums up the hero’s journey. His fiance’s family at the time moved to Europe so he did everything he could to be with her, hence the reason for the move to FC Groningen in the Eredivisie.

He’s had stints with FC Groningen, Ajax in Netherlands, Liverpool FC in England, and FC Barcelona & Atletico Madrid in Spain.

Suarez played a total of 691 games, scoring 436 goals with 238 assists. He made 674 goal contributions, winning 15 trophies and also 2X European Golden Boot one to do it in this era.

He has scored 59 international goals since the start of last decade (2010-2022)

An estimated 50,000 fans were waiting to greet him at the club’s stadium.

Suarez described his reception as “incredible and unforgettable” adding: “What began as a dream is today a reality.”

Before his official presentation he posted a selfie on his Instagram from the Nacional dressing room doing a thumbs up in front of a row of his number nine shirts.

His wife posted incredible footage on her Instagram of excited fans lining the road from the airport to the stadium and crowding round Suarez’s chauffeur-driven car to greet their idol.

The striker, expected to take part in his last World Cup in Qatar starting in November, confirmed earlier this week he was returning to Nacional after becoming a free agent when his contract at Atletico Madrid expired in June.

Revealing the news in a video on Instagram he said: “I’ve now reached a pre-agreement in order to join Nacional, it was impossible for me to say no to this opportunity.
